Weekly News & Homework: February 3rd-7th
Weekly News: February 3-7
Mark your calendars for two three-day weekends coming up in a row, as there is no school next Monday, February 10th and no school on Monday, February 17th.
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day together with some fun themed centers on Valentine's Day. Each student will need to make a Valentine's Day mailbox! Be sure to see the "homework" section for our February homework project for more information! If your child would like to make valentines for the class, a list of boys and girls names will be sent home this week. This is great writing practice for your child. Please check for a sign-up on ParentSquare (coming soon!) if you would like to donate towards our fun Valentine's Day centers on this day.

Writing: We will continue working on narrative (stories about our lives) and informational text, writing information about something (as we learn to write about the symbols we are learning about).
Math: We will continue working on addition and subtraction problems and word stories. You can help at home by asking your child a simple math story - "If we have three apples and two oranges, how many pieces of fruit do we have altogether? What number sentence would match that story?" This week we will learn how to use a number line to help us add and subtract. We have already learned how to use our fingers, draw a (dot) picture, and use a 10-frame to help us add and subtract. We will also begin discussing how there are many ways to make a number. Example: 5 can be 1 and 4, 2 and 3, 3 and 2, 4 and 1, 0 and 5, 5 and 0.
Leadership: We will continue to ROAR and discuss what it means to have a growth mindset!
Homework: February 3-7
Turn-In Homework for February: Each student will need to make a Valentine's Day mailbox to hold all of their Valentine's that they will receive on Valentine's Day in class! Your child can make his/her box out of any materials they would like! Some ideas would be to use a Kleenex box, cereal box, a bag, etc. These can be decorated with construction paper, stickers, paint, jewels, etc. Allow them to have fun and be creative in creating their mailbox to express what they like, and let it be a fun activity to do with your child! On Valentine's Day, everyone will be able to set their mailbox up on their desk and we will have time to pass out Valentine's cards. It is always such a fun part of our Valentine's Day celebration!
OPTIONAL Turn-In HOMEWORK: This week, your child will be coming home with a small paper book called "Me on the Map". This is a great book to help explain to your child where they live and grasp an understanding of house, in a city, in a state, etc. This is NOT mandatory, but it is a great opportunity to have those conversations as we learn about our country! If your child completes the book and brings it in to show me, they will get 10 cents for their "wallets" to use at the class store!
Flashcards: Make flashcards for our new sight words EACH, PHONE, LAUGH, ALSO, YOUR and new letter team is PH. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRACTICE ALL OF YOUR OLD FLASHCARDS - ESPECIALLY THOSE YOUR CHILD IS STILL STRUGGLING WITH - ASSESSMENTS AND REPORT CARDS ARE COMING UP!!!!
