Weekly News & Homework: October 1st-5th

Weekly News: October 1-5

Our very first kindergarten field trip is coming up! We will be going to Greenspot Farms in Mentone on Wednesday, October 17th. We will be leaving school by bus around 8:30 for our 9:00 farm tour. During this tour, our students will have the opportunity to enjoy a hayride, feed the farm animals, visit the honey house, learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin, and even pick their very own pumpkin to take home! We will then enjoy snack together at the picnic tables at 10:45, then be back to school in time for dismissal and electives. Please do not forget to donate $35 for our entire year of kindergarten field trips onto our school's Dollar a Day website. Here is the link:  Dollar A Day Link   Unfortunately, if we do not receive the funding, we will not be able to go on any other field trips this year. If you would like to chaperone, we would love to have you! Chaperones can either ride the bus with the students or drive separately. If you would like to chaperone, please let me know. Chaperones will need to bring $8 in exact cash on the day of the field trip. Unfortunately, siblings and little ones are not welcome on the field trip due to the safety of our kindergarten students. A permission slip will be coming home soon for our field trip, so make sure you fill that out and return it to me. We are looking forward to a great field trip together!

A new date has been set for Scholastic Book Orders!! If you would like to place new book orders, all orders will be submitted by Friday, October 12th! To order books, go to scholastic.com/bookclubs and use our class code: MD2GY. Thank you and happy reading! :)

Please be sure to sign and send back to blue paper coming home this week called the "BRAINIACS CONTRACT". Please read it with your child, as this is a school-wide contract. (If you have already submitted one, you will not receive a new one.) Thank you so much!

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: HE, SHE, WENT, TO, PLAY.

Letter Team:  AY (like in PLAY, DAY) and ING (like in SING, RING).

Word Family: -AY and -AM. Please help your child with word families of the week by asking them to create different words with  the word family -ay (for example: BAY, DAY, SAY, MAY, HAY) and -am (SAM, HAM, RAM, SLAM).

Reading: This week we will be doing an Author Study on Laura Numeroff and reading her fun circular stories (they begin and end in the same way) As we learn about cycles (in seasons), we will learn to make predictions in these fun circular stories. We will also continue reading books about Autumn and leaves. We will continue to read our paper books (hopefully LOTS of them will be sent home this week to keep in at-home book boxes!!!) and work on our letters, sounds, and sight words every day. Our class library has also opened up this week and your child has the opportunity to select books from the library to read in class and keep in their "in-class" book box!

Writing:  Your child will bring home his or her September journal this week. Please go over these with your children, praising them for their efforts and discussing ways to make our writing even better. We will continue focusing on writing a complete sentence, starting with a capital letter, using finger spaces, and ending with punctuation.

Math: We will keep working hard on counting goals, number writing goals, and number ID goals. Last week each student has set a number goal that involves either counting or number writing. Be sure to ask your child what his/her goal is! This week, we are learning how to solve addition word problem. You can help your child at home by asking them addition word problems. Example: "I see 3 red leaves and 2 brown leaves. How many do I see altogether?" We are also learning how to make a number sentence to make the word problem: 3+2=5. They are learning that the addition sign means "and" and the equals sign means "is".

Leadership: For the month of October, our whole school will be focusing on the O of ROAR: Own Your Actions. We will talk about what that means and how we can own our actions at school. Our goal is to have students take ownership of their own behavior as we all strive to be leaders in our classroom and school.

Homework: October 1-5

Flashcards: Make flashcards for our new sight words (HE, SHE, WENT, TO, PLAY), letter teams (AY and ING), and word family (AM). Study these flashcards (and those from previous weeks) every day.

Phonemic Awareness: Keep working with your child on skills such as blending, segmenting, rhyming, syllables, and sound switch.

Reading: Read books and review the paper books coming home to live in your book box at home. Continue to read TO your child every night, having conversations about the stories you are reading. Continue to log onto Smarty Ants for 10-15 at least a few times a week.

Writing: If you have not done so already, I highly recommend picking up a small notebook or journal for your at-home writing. Have your child write in this every day. All of our students have been doing a great job writing their name and ABCs. We should still be practicing our sight words each day. September Journals will come home this week. Take a moment to look over your child's writing this month, celebrating successes and discussing ways to make our writing even better! All students should be at the point where we are attempting to write at least one sentence each day with a picture to match.

Math: Continue to play Dreambox for 10-15 minutes each night. Continue to count to 30, 50, or 100 every day, practice number flashcards out of order, practice writing your numbers to 20 or higher, practice identifying shapes and drawing shapes. Remember to also go over our "Daily Math" practice pages that we do every morning in class - take a moment to go over these practice pages to see if there is anything specific your child needs to work on.

Our school code for Dreambox is X2we/inlandlcs

QR Codes: Download and print those QR Codes each week from ParentSquare and have your child work on those at home!
