Weekly News & Homework: March 4th-8th

We had so much fun dressing up and celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. Thank you for all of your help, time, donations, and to all of our guest readers! Make sure to check out our pictures on the ParentSquare post.

The school has been working hard to get our class enough iPads for each student to have their own to use in class!! As of this week, we have enough!!! That being said, you may send a pair of headphones for your child to use on their very own iPad at school each day if you would like to. (If you are unable to, I do have extra headphones.) If you DO send some in, please clearly label them with your child's name, so I know which iPad to connect them to! THANK YOU! :)

Parent Conferences for this trimester will be on a NEED ONLY basis and will be taking place the last week of school before Spring Break. Report cards will be going home digitally this trimester on Friday, March 15.

Over the next two weeks, your homework job as a family is to build a tricky leprechaun trap! We are going to be talking and writing about how we might catch a leprechaun. You will have two weeks to build your leprechaun trap with your family - be as creative as you can! A good idea is to google or pinterest leprechaun trap examples for lots of fun ideas! You will bring these traps to school to share next week, Monday through Thursday, with Thursday being the LAST day to turn it in! We are going to set up our traps around the room! Have fun!

Continue to work on your community service projects. These will be due the first week of May - They will need to be turned in before May 11th to qualify for the Leadership Banquet.
Community Service is part of the expectation for every student who attends ILCS.  Each kindergarten student will need to commit to 6 to 8 hours for their individual service project.  Students will present their community service project to their class by the end of the year.

The Service Project should include the following:
1) A Service Log Listing 6 or more hours
2) A Visual Presentation that is Organized and Student Created
3) An Oral Presentation that is clear and well prepared
  1. 4)A Written/Typed Paragraph explaining what you did and what you learned.

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: OVER, UNDER, LEFT, RIGHT, PUT.

Letter Team:  DGE (sounding like "j" like in BADGE, LEDGE, and FRIDGE).

Reading: Our focus this week is FICTION books. We will learn to identify the characters, setting, problem, solution, and plot (beginning, middle, and end of a story).

Writing: We are focusing on picking a topic and writing five sentences on that topic using our proper conventions!

Math: We will continue to focus on decomposing and composing numbers within ten. You can help at home by asking your children problems like, "If I need 10 cupcakes and I only have 4, how many more would I need?" We will also work on addition strategies.

Leadership: We will continue to ROAR and discuss what it means to have a growth mindset!

Homework: March 4-8

Flashcards: Don't forget to make new flashcards for each sight word and letter team. New words for this week are: OVER, UNDER, LEFT, RIGHT, PUT and the new letter team is: DGE - (sounding like "j" like in BADGE, LEDGE, and FRIDGE).

Phonemic Awareness: Please work with your child on: rhyming, blending, segmenting, syllables, and beginning/middle/ending sounds.

Reading: Make sure you read your Book Bag every night. This includes: fluency passages, paper books, sight word and letter team pages, and library books. Continue to log onto Smarty Ants for 10-15 at least a few times a week. You can also read leveled books on RAZ-Kids and take quizzes on books read.  Play Smarty Ants for 10-15 minutes each night.

Writing: Write three to five sentences in your at-home journal.

Math: Play Dreambox for 10-15 minutes each night. Continue to discuss ways to make 5 (and ways to make 10!), numbers in base ten (in the number 16, how many tens and how many ones?), addition and subtraction number problems and word problems, 2D and 3D shapes, and the Doubles Song. Count the money in your wallet.
