Weekly News: February 11-15

I hope you enjoyed a relaxing three-day weekend with your families. We have another three day weekend coming up next week, as there is no school on Monday, February 18th.

We had a great time on our field trip! Thank you to all of the parents that were able to come along and chaperone! :)

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day with fun centers on Thursday. Don't forget to bring your valentines for the class and your mailboxes!! Students will be passing out valentines to their friends during our centers.

For the next two weeks, our kindergarten classes will be having a sight word and letter team challenge! Each student will be coming home with a sight word review sheet and a letter team review sheet in his or her backpack. Practice these sheets every night and keep studying those flashcards! We will be practicing our sight words and letter teams in class, as well as playing fun sight word and letter team games. At the end of the two weeks (February 22nd), we will test students on all sight words and letter teams learned so far this year and the kindergarten class that has learned the most will win EXTRA RECESS!

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: ANY, MANY, BUT, WERE, PEOPLE.

Letter Team:  We will revisit and focus on all of our "2 Vowels Go Walking" this week. The rule is "when two vowels go a-walking, the first one does the talking, by saying it's name!" You can help your child with this by making flashcards for AI, EA, OA, OE, and UI. We will work on decoding words with this rule - like RAIN, LEAF, GOAT, TOE, and FRUIT.

Reading:
We will read books about Valentine's Day. Also, f
or the next two weeks, we will read books about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Writing:  We will continue practicing writing a Step Up to Writing paragraph with a topic sentence, three things about that topic, and a conclusion sentence. All students have specific writing goals that they are working on each day.

Math:
This week, we will continue to learn about place value (tens and ones). Next week, I will begin my end of the trimester assessments. Make sure to keep practicing all math skills with your child, as they will be assessed on their counting, shapes, measurement, place value, addition and subtraction, composing and decomposing.

Leadership: We will continue to ROAR and discuss what it means to have a growth mindset!

Homework: February 11-15

Flashcards: Don't forget to make new flashcards for each sight word and letter team. New words for this week are: ANY, MANY, BUT, WERE, PEOPLE and we are also studying our two vowels go walking: AI, EA, OA, OE, UI. WE ARE HAVING A KINDERGARTEN SIGHT WORD AND LETTER TEAM CHALLENGE! SO STUDY ALL OF YOUR SIGHT WORDS AND LETTER TEAMS!

Phonemic Awareness: Please work with your child on: rhyming, blending, segmenting, syllables, and beginning/middle/ending sounds.

Reading:  Students will also be taking home a second trimester review page for sight words and letter teams. Please practice these pages and QR them! Continue to practice your A-Z paper books and your library books. Continue to read TO your child every night, having conversations about the stories you are reading. Continue to log onto Smarty Ants for 10-15 at least a few times a week. You can also read leveled books on RAZ-Kids and take quizzes on books read.

Writing: Continue to work on your writing goals as you write three to five sentences every day in your at-home journal. If you have not done so already, writing practice can also be to write your friend's names on his or her valentines. Writing names is great writing practice!

Math: Continue to practice place value with your child. Continue to play Dreambox for 10-15 minutes each night. Continue to practice your addition and subtraction facts and your number bonds. Count the money in your "bank" each day.

QR Codes: QR Codes: Download and print the QR Code practice pages on ParentSquare. Work on these pages together.
Turn in Homework Assignment: THIS MONTH'S TURN-IN ASSIGNMENT IS DUE BY VALENTINE'S DAY!!! The assignment is to make some kind of "mailbox" for their Valentine's from their friends! We will be setting our mailboxes up on our desks on Valentine's day and passing out Valentine's in each other's boxes! Some ideas are you could make a mailbox out of a shoebox, tissue box, a paper bag, cereal box, etc. Have fun and allow your child to be creative in making a mailbox!! :)
